Two Haiku: Tufts to Truth

dandelion tufts
exploring new sod
colonists

took years to know
the cards dealt weren’t me
only clouds

A bit about Jean: Jean Biegun began writing poetry in the century-turning year 2000, during a creative writing course taken to transcend urban job stress. James Wright’s “Lying in a Hammock at William Duffy’s Farm in Pine Island, Minnesota” knocked the top of her head off the first time she read it (still does). She’d read only Robert Frost’s formal poems since teacher’s college way back when analysis of the iambic pentameter of the dead white English guys constituted poetry appreciation. The nakedness of Wright’s last line after his pastoral free-verse images stunned her, and she was hooked. Poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. She has received two Pushcart nominations and written two poetry collections, Hitchhikers to Eden and Edge Effects (2022 and 2024, Kelsay Books). Recent work is in Mad Swirl, As It Ought to Be, Third Wednesday, The Scarred Tree: Poetry on Moral Injury, Ekstasis, Unbroken, and Thin Places and Sacred Spaces: A Poetry Anthology (Amethyst Press). She is retired in California after a lifetime in the Midwest.
