the sink is full again
not dramatic, just full
a bowl with oatmeal stuck to the side
two glasses cloudy from last night

the sponge smells bad
i rinse it anyway
because that’s what i always do first
even though it never helps

someone left a cabinet open
i close it with my hip
the hinge makes the same soft complaint
it’s made for years

the floor needs sweeping
but only in the corners
the middle still passes
if you don’t look too hard

a receipt sits on the counter
for something i don’t remember buying.
i fold it once, then again,
then leave it there

the clock on the microwave
is fast by four minutes.
i haven’t fixed it
because knowing it’s wrong
is close enough to knowing the time

the house hums
in the way it does
when nothing is happening
and everything still needs doing
