Resolve

In 3…2…1…

Hurtling thru space and time
we attempt to make modern reasons
from ancient rhymes.
While the clock hands keep on ticking,
clicking closer to the end.
In the grander scheme of all things,
we are here for mere seconds,
tiniest specs upon a tiny spec.

Our fragile world revolves
tirelessly around the sun.
And we human beings resolve
to make this next lap
better than the last.
Believing we know the mystery
that propels us ever onward,
expanding and imploding with the cosmos.

Spinning into oblivion
uncertainly certain of our fates,
we wait to see if this annual revolution
begets some much-needed evolution.

Every year we hope, we pray,
we create resolutions,
make lists and maybe,
for a week or two
we follow & obey
these good intentions.

But sooner than later,
like our dying days,
these self-help solutions
fade away, forgotten like the wisps of smoke
from this forbidden cigarette.
The plume floating around for a few ticks and
poof, gone, but its sickly scent still lingers on.

Right now is all we have.
We cannot save the moments,
hoard them, buy or sell them.
They just keep coming… until they don’t.
By the time we’ve counted down to nil,
This moment, once filled, is now past,
as we tag along, chasing the new now,
just trying to make right now last.

This new now, unlike the old now, is our when and how. – mh clay
