New Beginnings

Here in an empty room bereft of life,
there are mute walls,
an observant ceiling,
the strangled creaks
from a well-worn floor
each adding to a thunderous
orchestral silence.

Settled in the dust of lost memory
it awaits occupation
without invitation;
a box within a box,
in a labyrinth of nothingness,
save for outlines of framed emptiness.

The past keeps its secrets
concealing passed choices
awaiting new incarnations
beginnings, triumphs,
travails, suffering
forgiveness, adoration
birth and loss.

A new breed to snuff out
unheard voices from tired walls
entombed in layers of fresh paint,
sounds of merriment
and the flop of envelopes
both welcome and feared
hitting the mat with equal innocence.

New sofa strong and sprung
enters through the very door
as the feet of former dwellers
ready for spills,
lust and video games.

Yet, the lull between occupation
lingers behind the veneer
of new beginnings
leaving traces of its sticky DNA
where it remains forever
reserving judgement.
