Marmalade

this is the life of the funeral party,
seeing, a long ways,
into the future —
I raise me up,
you can come, too

I’ve landed here from
another country,
desperate to get the word out
Jesus — if I believed,
cranes his neck to see

there are great big red apples
pouring out of me,
i’d eat them all
but i don’t want to spoil
my supper,
the luxury of marmalade,
amidst a devastating war

– John Swofford

Saturated by sweetness, desensitized to sadness – swathed in sick sensations. – mh clay
