by firelight
–    drinking whiskey
pass around the bottle
–    pass around the joint
easy conversation
–    music in the night

liquid burns
smoke burns
daylight burns
muscles burn

–    sassafras and birch tea
forest is deep dark
–    alive
snap of distant fire works
–    towns below
the trains scream into the night

but that’s for tomorrow

for now
it’s fourth of july
–    high in the appalachians
