The chair in the corner of the funeral parlor

yellow and plush
How many tear drops?
have gathered in its arms

My niece plops down
and the remnants
of past sadness
languishes and sparkles
in the cascade sunlight
from the west-facing window
enveloped
in other’s previous grief

(can grief have
a past?) (when it always feels
so present)

a shroud – a halo
then settles
on and around her

editors note:

Our halo, and our hole; it fills to leave us empty. – mh clay
