Beast

I am the beast in the bar
The beast who drinks anything and everything
The beast who sits devouring whatever it is that comes my way
The beast inside takes control the more I drink for
I am the beast in the bar
The beast who repels women with my je ne sais quoi
I am the beast who simply can’t say no to a drink or the chance to get high
The beast that drinks just to get drunk
I am the beast who prowls the bar looking for cast-off drink and cast-off women for
I am the beast

A bit about Bradford: Bradford Middleton lives in Brighton on England’s south coast. He won his first poetry competition at age 9, then promptly gave up for twenty-five years and, it’s fair to say, his style has changed some since those days. When he moved here he knew no one and had no money so would spend his nights in his room writing mad frantic verse to keep his mind awake. Then one day the impossible happened, those glorious souls at Mad Swirl agreed to publish one of his poems. Since then he’s been published all over the internet, in some journals and zines, and had five chapbooks of his poems released. The latest, The Whiskey Stings Good Tonight…, published in 2023 by the Alien Buddha Press, even features a blurb by MH Clay, poetry editor right here at the Mad Swirl.
