ninth month bliss
a human companion
to her furry child
her angry kicks
on my chest
fall of poppy petals
paper art
I linger by her
pink mountain

satiated in dreams
he pats his stomach
the homeless man
flying in sleep
and off his bed
rolls the toothless superman
under the roots
of ancient oak
buried childhood dreams

summer rain
a baby sparrow’s
soft chirp
butterflies in silky stem
the fragrance of
plastic roses
immigrant gardener huddled
in a corner
the scent of dried leaves
before diagnosis
the sun protrudes
with its lump-sized flesh

Before turning into my cabinet
they were teak trees,
their tangled bark
smoothened through many cuts.
I heard they protested with every bruise,
snapped their branches at
every beating they took
and the wind howled when they
were forced out of mother earth.
But, the axe had its way
so that I do not have to work on the floor.
My cabinet now looks ‘pretty’ and
polished, wiping out all traces
of the rough bark, wild and intertwined.
Our kitchens come from carnage. Deaf to their cries, we bake our pies. – mh clay

In this new year, let’s have sun after rain. – mh clay
